Companies talk about being "green" people search for products that are "green" and cities enforce by-laws that are "green". What is "green"? Is it producing a product that makes a consumer pay a great premium for being environmentally conscious? Is it a product that is just slightly more environmentally friendly than previous products so you can say that the new version of the product is "green". At Accell we believe green is an on-going and balanced approach to manufacturing product that reduces the impact on the environment while making it economically viable for our customers.
We have installed a chemistry-free computer to plate system resulting in zero toxic waste from the plate making process. This system eliminates the use of developer and fixer. Besides producing a superior plate for quality and production it also results in zero toxic waste from the plate-making process. Elimination of fixer and developer waste which requires custom disposal and can contaminate water if not properly disposed of. Result: Elimination of thousands of litres of waste fixer and developer per year. Result: Higher quality of production resulting in less overall production waste and associated energy costs. Result: All plates are recycled resulting in a 99.9% plate production recycling.
Accell has and will continue to recycle the maximum possible of any production material or energy source possible. If there is a way to recycle the product we will recycle the product. This mandate not only includes all paper production waste, all waste shipping cartons and cardboard, all used and waste press plates. We recently installed high-efficency lights throughout our plant, decreasing our demand on the power grid.
Accell contracts "Green Power," which utilizes electricity generated exclusively from wind and low-impact hydro generators which meet or exceed the federal government's Environmental Choice Program EcoLogo standard for renewable electricity. Result: all electricity used within Accell is produced using non-polluting forms of electricity such as wind power.
We offer customers a full range of stock, including a wide variety of reclaimed papers from environmentally-conscious mills. This includes papers certified to meet the environmental and social standards of the Forest Stewardship Council ® (FSC®). Outside our physical plant, we support conservation areas, community recycling initiatives and other efforts to preserve and enhance the natural world around us.
Accell uses vegetable source inks which contain extremely low VOCs. What are VOCS? Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are organic chemical compounds that have high enough vapour pressures under normal conditions to significantly vaporize and enter the atmosphere. A wide range of carbon-based molecules, such as aldehydes, ketones, and hydrocarbons are VOC's. VOCs are sometimes accidentally released into the environment, where they can damage soil and groundwater. Vapours of VOCs escaping into the air contribute to air pollution.
Accell has selected to use one of the most environmentally friendly digital printing processes available. Which features, No developer, no toner waste, No toner ‘jumping’ to the paper (eliminating toner pollution). 50% lower fusing temperature which results in a considerable reduction of energy consumption. The PIN-array corona unit generates extremely low ozone quantities, far below threshold values.
As computers become outdated and impractical for their primary use Accell repurposes the computers for use at tasks that are less intensive. Result: Although the labour cost is generally higher to repurpose a computer than it is to purchase a computer designed for a particular task, the policy of repurposing eliminates the sending of highly toxic computer workstations to landfill sites.
